Experience the autumnal atmosphere
Do you want to catch every single last ray of sunshine? Try strolling along the natural banks of the Meuse river in between wild horses and cattle, and have a taste of the autumnal atmosphere in the picturesque Meuse villages of RivierPark Maasvallei.
Highly recommended as well: wander through heathland and colourful woods in Hoge Kempen National Park, where you can admire fungi in all shapes and colours. The perfect place to collect fallen leaves, acorns and other autumn treasures which you can use for crafts with your children or redecoration with an autumn touch. Another tip: gather sweet chestnuts and roast them!

Its possible thanks to the story journey Legendes van de Maas (Legends of the Meuse river), which leads you along the exciting and amusing folk tales of Uikhoven and Kotem. You start at the crossing of Pastoor Goosensstraat and Paanhuisstraat. The legends are written on information signs you come across on the way, but you can also buy a brochure at Visit Maasmechelen. The route is 7 km and you can make it longer by adding a walk through the forelands of the Meuse river.
Via the heritage app, you can download the most intriguing stories about the Eisden Tuinwijk (Garden district) and the mining past to your smartphone. You can also let yourself be led by a guide. The Ranger journeys at the National Park are a special experience for young and old.
Taste the wild autumn flavours
In the many restaurants and brasseries in Maasmechelen, you can find autumn on a plate. Taste game dishes at De Mangerie, Barbacoa, Spoon, Poort 82, Magnifiek, À propos Bistro or t Salamanderke. Enjoy Italian flavours at Da Lidia, Osteria Cellini, Leonardo, La Strada… Complete your meal with a delicious, autumn beer.
